Road Safety and Diesel Trends: Michigan’s “Eyes on 94” Campaign and Nationwide Fuel Price Updates

Michigan State Police (MSP) motor carrier officers are intensifying their enforcement on the I-94 corridor this week. This initiative, part of the statewide “Eyes on 94” operation, aims to reduce commercial vehicle crashes along this crucial transport route. The effort will run through Friday, Dec. 1, focusing on violations like speeding, following too close, improper passing, distracted driving, and improper lane use.

Targeting Key Violations for Crash Reduction

During this enforcement blitz, officers will concentrate on behaviors most likely to lead to accidents. Captain Richard Arnold of the MSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division emphasizes that this is part of a larger goal to improve traffic safety and reduce crashes, particularly weather-related incidents involving commercial vehicles.

The “Eyes on 94” initiative is a crucial element of the statewide Drive Toward Zero Deaths campaign. This campaign aligns with a national highway safety strategy that seeks to significantly reduce traffic fatalities across the country.

Diesel Prices Slide as Spot Rates Rise

Recent Trends in Diesel Prices and Transportation Rates

In a turn of events this Thanksgiving week, the national average diesel price has seen a notable decrease. The Energy Information Administration’s report highlights a 6.3-cent reduction in fuel prices. This drop brings the national average for a gallon of on-highway diesel to $4.15, down from $4.21 the previous week.

The current fuel price is $1 cheaper than the same week last year and 43 cents higher than in 2021. All U.S. regions experienced declines, with the Midwest seeing the most significant drop. However, California remains the outlier with diesel prices over $5 per gallon.

Rate Increases in the Transportation Sector

The EIA report details diesel prices in various regions, with the cheapest found in the Gulf Coast at $3.79 per gallon. ProMiles’ data aligns with these findings, showing similar trends in diesel pricing across the country.

Truckstop and FTR Transportation Intelligence report an overall increase in rates, despite a decrease in load and carrier availability due to the holiday. Dry vans, in particular, saw the most significant rate gain, a likely reflection of seasonal trend
