Unveiling the Latest on Kenworth Brake System Recall

FMCSA’s Latest ELD Mandate Update

PACCAR Inc., the renowned manufacturer, is initiating a recall for numerous models of Kenworth trucks due to a critical issue with the brake system’s air volume. This problem poses a heightened risk of accidents, prompting action to adhere to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 121, which covers “Air Brake Systems.”

Key Recall Information

  • Recall Campaign Identifier: 24V145000
  • Truck Models Impacted: Kenworth models C500 (2009-2021), T440 (2014-2016), T660 (2009-2015), T680 (2015-2024), T800 (2009-2024), T880 (2013-2023), and W900 (2009-2019).
  • Total Number of Trucks Affected: Approximately 697 units.
  • Solution Offered: Dealers will fit the appropriate air tanks at no cost to the owners.
  • Owner Notification Start Date: April 23, 2024.

The central issue identified is that the air tanks installed on these vehicles fail to meet the required air volume for optimal brake system performance, potentially reducing braking efficiency and increasing the risk of an accident. To rectify this, dealers will replace the air tanks with ones that meet the necessary specifications, free of charge to the truck owners. Notices to the vehicle owners are set to be sent out starting April 23, 2024.

Additional Resources for Owners

This recall is the result of a thorough investigation into trucks manufactured since January 2008, which found those lacking the mandatory air reservoir volume. Although this issue is significant, there have fortunately been no warranty claims, field reports, injuries, or fatalities reported in connection with this problem as of February 16, 2024.

For owners who have already paid out-of-pocket to address this issue, PACCAR offers a reimbursement plan. The recall decision was made after a review by the Safety Committee, with the final remedy action taking place on February 19, 2024. Dealer and owner notifications are being organized to ensure that all affected vehicles are brought into compliance with FMVSS 121 standards.
