At a recent customer event focused on vocational trucks and the new Model 579EV electric vehicle, Peterbilt had a surprise up its sleeve. Jake White, Peterbilt’s director of product marketing, delighted attendees with an unexpected reveal: the new Model 589 low-roof sleeper.
The demo truck showcased at the Texas Motor Speedway was outfitted with Peterbilt’s Model 589 Platinum interior trim. This premium option features a rich, burlwood grain dash and brightwork throughout the cab, culminating in a bold Peterbilt oval on the back wall of the sleeper. Adding to its allure, Peterbilt offers customizable paint options for this model, as seen in the demo truck’s striking Legendary Red and Black combination.
During a test drive around a road course inside the Speedway oval, the Model 589 demonstrated surprising agility for a long-nose conventional truck. Equipped with the Paccar TX-18 automated transmission and a 510-hp Paccar MX-13 engine, the truck offered brisk acceleration and tight steering, making it easy to navigate sharp turns. The drive was further enhanced by the sound-insulated comfort of the cabin, offering a serene experience behind the wheel.
The Model 589 low-roof sleeper is a testament to Peterbilt’s ability to merge the much-loved features of its classic long-nose trucks with the latest in powertrain and safety technology. It caters to the preferences of long-time Peterbilt fans while embracing advancements in truck design and performance.
While the formal launch of the new Peterbilt Model 589 72-inch low-rise sleeper is set for early next year, with more details to be released then, the sneak peek has already generated excitement and anticipation among truck enthusiasts and industry experts.
The acquisition reflects the rapidly evolving landscape of the electric truck market. Other major players, such as Nikola and Paccar, have also made moves to secure their battery supply chains, with varying degrees of success. The joint venture between Daimler, Paccar, and Cummins Inc. further underscores the increasing focus on lithium battery production in the U.S.
Peterbilt’s reveal of the Model 589 low-roof sleeper at the Texas Motor Speedway event underscores the company’s commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction. By balancing classic design elements with modern technology, Peterbilt continues to solidify its position as a leader in the trucking industry.
